AMP Global Strategies was made aware of the 911 outages in the Midwest and Southwest this past week. As new information was provided, it was a cut fiber line that impacted countless 911 calls.

Unfortunately, our company has been watching this issue for quite some time. AMP strives to ensure that all 911 customers have a standalone 911 switch. In the event of more than one fiber cut, they can function on a 10- digit ISP or any other style connection. In recent years, our networks have become more and more complex and together in various ways, that also makes them more vulnerable to outside attack.

AMP’s 911 customers can stand on their own in the event of a fiber cut. They have the ability to get a live person on the line by adding additional safeguards such as multiple ISP’s. AMP also added simple PBX or similar backup systems. We must consider even if we can forward 911 callers to other centers, do they have the capability to dispatch units? Are they familiar geographically with those coverage areas? Do they have CAD systems, and is all the mapping and information available.

AMP has found that a hastily built repair in the fiber system by the provider, caused excessive traffic to flow back over our private network, thus causing interference to many systems. As we move forward securing our network buildings, maintaining operations is a critical piece of providing service to the public. There is no cost savings worth someone needing emergency services in the event of major outages or a natural disaster.
