In a groundbreaking seminar held at the Bradford County Public Safety Center, active shooter prevention expert Chris Grollnek shared invaluable insights and innovative solutions to municipal and law enforcement officials. The seminar, aptly titled “The Gift of Time,” emphasized the importance of prevention. Grollnek’s extensive experience as a former Marine and police officer from McKinney, Texas, and his 33 years in protective measures have uniquely positioned him to address the pressing issue of active shootings. The event, hosted and organized by the Bradford County Commissioners and Public Safety Department, provided a platform for introducing proactive strategies and safeguarding communities against active shooter incidents.
One of the standout features of Grollnek’s approach is his focus on preventing incidents before they occur. While others concentrate on responding to active shooters, he believes in giving people “the gift of time” during such emergencies. Grollnek’s emphasis on saving valuable time is rooted in the harrowing statistics that reveal individuals often find themselves alone and vulnerable during active shooter events. His vision is to cut down and eliminate the crucial minutes that could be the difference between life and death. With the national average for the length of a school shooting being eight minutes—the same time it takes for police to arrive—Grollnek’s mission is to ensure that his innovative system buys back those precious minutes and provides people with the opportunity to respond swiftly and effectively.
The seminar also shed light on the need for a universal standard for the public in responding to active shooter events. While police follow the ALERRT (Active Shooter Level I Response) standard to stop shooters as quickly as possible, there is currently no equivalent standard for the public. This has led to confusion and mixed results, as different procedures, such as “run, hide, fight,” shelter-in-place, and lockdown, have been employed with varying degrees of success.
Grollnek’s call to demand a national standard for the public highlights the necessity of open communication and collaboration between local authorities and educators. By working together to establish a unified approach, communities can strengthen their response to active shooter incidents and protect lives more effectively.
The insights shared by Chris Grollnek during the seminar underscore the urgency of implementing comprehensive prevention measures and cutting-edge technology. By empowering individuals with the tools and knowledge to protect themselves and others, we move closer to creating a safer environment for our schools, workplaces, and communities. The Active Shooter Prevention Project (ASPP™) is dedicated to driving this mission forward and contributing to a future where the gift of time becomes an invaluable resource in safeguarding lives.
