Independence Resilience and Freedom
A message from Chris Grollnek, Active Shooter Expert, the Active Shooter Prevention Project (ASPP), LLC, Chairman of the Board on Independence, Resilience, and Freedom.
On this Fourth of July, as fireworks light up our skies, I hope we all hear the sounds and theme of independence, freedom, and patriotism. Threats may still exist, danger may lurk, and evil does exist, but even so, we will not be deterred from our mission: Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.
As we celebrate with barbecues, music, song, dance, and fireworks (with safety and caution), lest we forget the cost to obtain the opportunity for the birth of our nation. It was not given; it was fought for. Humans died and sacrificed more than most could imagine for us to be here now, reading this, and believing in a better future for our families.
The future was not guaranteed. It wasn’t clear, certain, or free from fierce resistance. It was a gamble, a bold statement that freedom, self-rule, and human dignity were not goals only for a select few, but Rights for everyone. And yet, the America we experience today was once considered impossible.
History makes us comfortable, as if it brings us a sense of ease to get us this far. But behind every Independence Day banner is a story most don’t hear: the quiet, determined march of resilience. One example not in the headlines of history books, but in the little-known story of the United States Marine Corps’ earliest action, long before it became the premier fighting force of our country, the nation’s 911 force in readiness.
In 1776, mere months after the Declaration of Independence was signed, the newly formed Continental Marines, just weeks into existence, embarked on a daring mission: the Battle of Nassau in the Bahamas. Their objective was bold: seize critical gunpowder stores desperately needed by General Washington’s starving army. They crossed the sea, landed ashore, and despite overwhelming odds, captured Fort Montagu with resolve and precision. It was the first amphibious landing in Marine Corps history, conducted without precedent, without modern logistics, just sheer will and unity of purpose.
Why does this one example matter? Because it reminds us that greatness is not born from ease, it’s born from grit and fellow patriots who were ready to and did give their all for a better tomorrow. It’s forged in uncertainty. Everyone around those Marines in 1776 said it couldn’t be done that they were too new, too untrained, too few. But they saw what others couldn’t. They saw the invisible path, the one between the impossible and the inevitable and made it a reality.
Today, in our industries, our communities, and especially in our mission to protect the innocent and prevent the unthinkable, we often hear, “It can’t be done.” That preventing an active shooter or domestic terrorism event is wishful thinking. That readiness is too costly. I remind most, they print money, they do not print time. Invest both wisely and have zero regret. Awareness will never outrun violence. But as history has shown us, the people who change the world are the ones who refuse to believe in limits.
At the Active Shooter Prevention Project, we don’t wait for the next tragedy to “do something.” We lead with discipline. We build with purpose. We train with consistency. And we drive toward a destination we define simply as Destination #NEVERHERE To us, this is a place where tragedy never visits because preparation never rests.
So, as we celebrate our independence, let’s also remember the cost of that freedom and the responsibility that comes with it.
Happy Independence Day. May we continue to earn the freedom we’ve inherited and build the future we believe in, one community, one life, one act of courage at a time.
🇺🇸 Happy Birthday, America 🇺🇸
