In recent years, the frequency of active shooter incidents has underscored the urgent need for effective security solutions. While advances in technology have significantly improved our ability to detect potential threats, a critical gap remains between the moment of detection and the arrival of law enforcement. Addressing this gap is paramount to enhancing public safety and saving lives.
The Current Landscape of Active Shooter Detection
Modern security systems are equipped with sophisticated detection capabilities. Surveillance cameras, gunshot detection systems, and AI-driven analytics can identify potential active shooter situations almost instantaneously. These technologies notify law enforcement and building occupants within seconds, providing critical early warnings.
However, the mere detection of an active shooter does not inherently mitigate the threat. The crucial period between detection and police response often determines the outcome of such incidents. Unfortunately, this is where current security solutions fall short.
The Role of Legislation
The debate over how to address gun violence in the United States has led to various legislative proposals, some aiming to restrict access to firearms and others focusing on arming individuals in vulnerable locations.
- Gun Control Legislation:
-
- Background Checks and Red Flag Laws: Some states have implemented or proposed stricter background checks and red flag laws, which allow authorities to temporarily remove firearms from individuals deemed a threat to themselves or others.
- Assault Weapons Bans: There are ongoing discussions and legislative efforts at both state and federal levels to ban or restrict access to assault-style weapons and high-capacity magazines.
- Arming Teachers and Workers:
-
- State Legislation: Several states have passed or are considering laws that allow teachers and other school staff to carry firearms on school premises, provided they undergo specific training.
- Federal Proposals: There have been federal proposals to provide funding for schools to train and arm teachers as a deterrent against active shooters.
While these legislative measures aim to address the broader issue of gun violence, they also highlight the urgent need for immediate response solutions that can protect lives in the critical moments following the detection of an active shooter.
Drones as First Responders
In addition to legislative measures, technological advancements such as the deployment of drones as first responders offer a promising enhancement to early detection capabilities. Upon detecting or notification of a threat, police departments are beginning to adopt drones to immediately dispatch to the scene, equipped with high-definition cameras. These drones provide real-time situational awareness to law enforcement, allowing them to assess the situation accurately and plan their intervention more effectively. Even though their role as advanced surveillance tools ensures police have the most up-to-date information, these drones do not engage directly with the threat. The effects on the ground may be positive, but most of these solutions are passive and only provide another means of detection. Drones as first responders are better labeled as “drones as first detectors”.
The Critical Gap: Response Time
The national average for law enforcement agencies to respond to active shooter situations is approximately 8 minutes. However, in the context of an active shooter scenario, even a few minutes can result in significant casualties. The gap between the initial detection and the arrival of police officers is a perilous window where the assailant can continue to cause harm unabated.
Consider how we address the threat of fires. We have smoke detectors and fire alarms that provide early detection, but we don’t simply wait for the fire department to arrive. We have sprinkler systems in place that automatically engage to control and mitigate the fire’s spread, buying crucial time and often saving lives and property. This multi-layered approach ensures a higher level of protection and immediate response, even before professional help can arrive.
Similarly, for active shooter situations, we need comprehensive solutions that go beyond mere detection. By investing in and implementing these innovations, we can move towards a future where communities are better protected and prepared, reducing the reliance on reactive measures and enhancing overall public safety.
Innovative Solutions to Bridge the Gap
To address this critical gap, we must look beyond detection and towards immediate response mechanisms. The technological solutions mentioned above are steps in the right direction but still do not address the need for immediate response. All the advanced camera analytics and drones flying from the local PD will not stop the carnage on the ground.
Brecourt Solutions is developing the modern-day sprinkler system for active shooters and other high threats. Our solution not only deters, detects, and distracts but also provides a non-lethal, nonviolent solution to defend innocent bystanders. This system can be integrated into existing building infrastructures and activated automatically in response to a detected threat. To put it plainly and simply, we use drone swarms to target and malfunction firearms, turning the deadliest tool in the situation into a paperweight.
